The Benefits of Swiss Screw Machining

By Avanti Engineering

CNC turning machines or lathes manufacture parts by removing material as the machine spins the original bar stock. The bar stock can be a variety of shapes and will be help in place by a chuck as material is shaved off under tight tolerances to meet part specifications. Swiss screw machining is similar to traditional CNC turning but unlike turning, the headstock on a Swiss screw machine moves.  This movement on a Swiss Screw machine follows a Z pattern and is capable of creating complex parts by performing many operations at the same time. The collet and guide bushings of a Swiss Screw machine allow the machine to make closer cuts.

There are several processes that Swiss Screw machines can perform making it ideal for high volume runs.  A multi-axis machine is used to created complete CNC parts in a single operation. Multi-process machines perform operations such as boring and drilling simultaneously on a Swiss Screw machine. For high volume runs, an automatic bar feeder will continuously feed the Swiss Screw machine with bars so the production process is uninterrupted. A chip evacuation system is imperative for large runs as it will keep the machine free of interference from shaved material and allow the machine to produce quality machined parts. Swiss Screw Machines can produce parts from a variety of materials offering versatility to meet customer requirements.

A Swiss Screw machine can produce finished goods; replacing the need for separate machines to complete each of the operations. This offers customers shorter setup time and quicker tooling of the needed part.  Our machinists at Avanti Engineering are committed to producing precision Swiss Screw Machine parts.  Contact us for a quote on your Swiss Screw Machining project.
